GASING

Subj : Imaginary for Narrative and Storyboards

For this task I need to make a story that have a culture and history so I think I want to make a story about traditional game that I always see when I was child. My story is about 'Gasing' or in English we call it 'Top' it is a traditional game from Kelantan and it be played all around Malaysia. Gasing not only popular among the children but it also played by adults.

Gasing is a game that is made from wood that can be spinning it comes in many shape and size. Other than that gasing also have many type and each type have their own unique. For example the type of gasing such as gasing jantung, gasing piring, gasing kelamar, gasing telur, gasing berembang, gasing melayu, gasing cina, gasing buku benang dan gasing pinang. Here some picture that I take from internet to show the type of the gasing.

Gasing Jantung
Gasing Piring

For my story I want to show that the important of each part of the gasing that will make the gasing spinning perfectly and will spinning in a long time. This is some of my narrative for my story :

Introduction
In a village there is one boy name Abu. He has 2 best friend names Ah Seng and Mutthu. Every evening they will spend time together playing gasing. One day while they playing under a big tree in front of the house suddenly Abu’s mothers call him. She asks Abu to help her go to shop and buy some groceries for her. Abu leave his friend for a while.

Climax
While Abu goes to the shop his friend stops playing gasing and take a break. Meanwhile in the same time gasing, string, nail and Tapak Uri start taking to each other. They argue who is the most important part in a gasing game. Everyone wants to say that he is the most important part compare to each other. After that they start to fight to each other.

Ending
When the nail, gasing, and string are fighting each other suddenly Tapak Uri comes and tries to stop the argument. He explains to them that all of them are very important to make the gasing spin perfectly. They understand and befriend again. At the same time Abu comes back from the shop and get his friend back. They start playing the gasing game and they enjoy playing the game.

Closure
Every situation that has been created has its own advantages and importance. like a top, they need each other to ensure that the top can spin properly if one of the top part of it is not perfect, it cannot be spinning tops with balanced.

REFLECTION
= From this task I know more about the history of the gasing and know the function of each part of the gasing.
= This task make me remember all the joy moment when I a little kid compare with nowadays majority the kid does not know what is gasing event they do not know how to play gasing. Kids nowadays always with their smart phone and I think it is not a healthy lifestyle.

DEAF DUMB DAD STORYBOARDS

Subj : Imaginary for Narrative and Storyboards

On this week we are ask to watch a short video about Deaf Dumb Dad and than we need to interpret it into a storyboards. The storyboards that we must produce must be at least 15 frame and the maximum is 20 frame and above. In this task I make 20 frame in my storyboards first I need to identify the important part in the story and try to make it short but still can be understand the story line.

After I have identify the important part I need to do a sketches base on the part that I have choose, it is just a rough sketch. This sketch just want to make we understand the position, the staging, and the camera angle. Other than that I also need to identify the character,I try to simplify the character so when other see the character will understand and know the person's character in this story such as the girl in the story the character is someone look like a nerd girl, always being bullied by other in the class because of his father, and love to be alone. Therefore I made the character a girl look tidy and wear a round and thick glasses with a pony tail. For his father I just made the father character look fat and with a bald at the middle of the head, wearing a singlet and glasses it will represent the person was someone who poor and hard working father.

In this task I learnt that when we want to make a storyboard the important part that we must focus was the position of the character. When we make a sketch the background should not draw too detail just simple thing that will represent the thing on the background.

REFLECTION

= Analyzing the story is quite easy but to identify the most important part in each of the story line  is not easy that I though. we need to focus when do this part.
= Other than that we need to study the character deeply so that it will make our work in simplify the character more easy and we know why we made the character like that.

Inking for Deaf Dumb Dad storyboards.

Subj : Imaginary for Narrative and Storyboards

For this task we need to continue what we have done in the previous task after we finis our story board we need to inking it nicely. for me it is first time  to do it using the ball pen. I usually only use color or pencil to inking my drawing but for this time I need to learnt to inking my drawing use a ball pen. It quite interesting for me because I can see the affect and the difference when using different material.

When we want to start do the inking process we need to think carefully and we need to know which part that we want to make it look clear and which part that we want to make it very detail. For me it is importance because it will give you a clear massage what we want to tell the audience such as when I draw for the first image that a girl standing in front of the mirror I learn that some of the image that inside of the mirror should not too detail because if I made it detail maybe the audience will confuse which one is real and which one image on the mirror.

REFLECTIVE

= From here I learnt to draw using ball pen it not easy for me but I try my best to control the ball pen and I feel that when I use a different paper when do the inking the result also different.
= When do the inking process we need to think to make it look interesting and need to know which the light come from so we can make the shadow nicely.
= We also need to make inking for each of the character correctly so it will show the character.

Making A Flip book

Subj : 2D Animation
Task : Structure

flip book is one of the way to do an animation. For this time I need to do the basic principle of animation into a flip book and it will make me more understanding about the principle of animation.

Making a flip book is not easy and also not to hard, what we need to produce a flip book is the quality paper. If we just use a thin paper it will make the flip book difficult to flip and we cannot see the movement smoothly. There is good and bad using a thin paper, the good thing is we can trace the image easily and easy to make a movement with a nice arcs but the bad thing is when we flip it there is some page will not flip and it will be skip some of the movement.

Other than that when make a flip book make sure use a suitable size of the book because when you use a big size but have less pages it will be difficult to flip and at the end we cannot see what it's about.

Other than that for me it is difficult to maintain the size of the image if we not use the light box. I cannot estimate the space between one action to another action and one pages to another pager therefor using the light box help me a lot to solve my problem.

There is some of the principle of animation that for me it easy to understand and easy to draw it in the flip book such as squash and stretch, arcs, and follow through and overlapping but there is a some for me it difficult such as the secondary action. I have difficulties to understanding what is actually mean by secondary action and lastly I use you tube and watch the example of the movie that is show about secondary action and FINALLY I understand what is secondary action. Secondary action is a movement that happen after the primary action such as an ant fall into the jelly the primary action was an ant will be bouncing on the top of the jelly and the secondary action was the jelly will be shaking.

When making a flip book we must draw the drawing movement a little by little so we can see the nice movement. From here also I understand that when we want to make the animation move faster we can draw the image with large space between one page to another page.

For the finishing of the flip book we must make sure that the end or the ages of the flip book are same so that it will be easy to flip and there is no page will be skip.

12 Basic Principle Of Animation

Subj : 2D Character Animation
Task : Basic Characterization and Proposing Idea

For this task we need to make a research and understand about the basic principle of the animation. There is 12 basic principle of animation that we should know :

1 . Squash and stretch

  •  Gives the illusion of weight and volume to a character as it move.
  •  Useful in animating dialogue and doing facial expressions.
  •  How extreme the use of this principle is depends on what is required on animating the scene.
  •  It's broader in a short style of picture and subtler in a feature.
  •  Use in all forms of character animation from a bouncing ball to the body weight of a person walking

2 . Anticipation

  • Prepares the audience for a major action the character is about to perform, such as,starting to run, jump or change expression.
  • A dancer does not just leap off the flour. A backwards motion occurs before the forward action is executed.
  • The backwards motion is the anticipation.
  • A comic effect can be done by not using anticipation after a series of gags that use anticipation.
  • Almost all the real action has the major or minor anticipation such as a pitcher's wind up or the golfers' back swing.
  • Feature animation is often less broad than short animation unless the scene require it to develop a character personality.

3. Staging
  • A pose or action should clearly communicate to the audience the attitude, mood, reaction or idea of the character as it related to the story and continuity of the story line.
  • The effective use of long, medium, or close up shots, as well as camera angle also helps in telling the story.
  • There is a limited amount of time in film, so each sequence, scene and frame of film must relate to the overall story.
  • Do not confuse the audience with to many actions at once.
  • Use one action clearly stated to get the idea across, unless you are animating a scene that is to depict clutter and confusion.
  • Staging directs the audience attention to the story or the idea being told.
  • Care must be taken in background design so it isn't obscuring animation or competing with it due to excess detail behind the animation.
  • Background and animation should work together as a pictorial unit in a scene.

4. Straight ahead and pose to pose animation
  • Straight ahead animation start at the first drawing and works drawing to the end of the scene.
  • You can lose size, volume, and proportions with this method, but it does have spontaneity and freshness.
  • Fast, wild action scene are done this way, as is the action.
  • The lead animator will turn charting and keys over to his assistant.
  • An assistant can be better used with this method so that the  animator doesn't have to draw every drawing in a scene.
  • An animator can do more scene this way and concentrate on the playing of the animation.
  • Many scene use a bit of both method of animation.

5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
  • When the main body of the character stops, all other parts continue to catch up to the main mass of the character. Such as arms, long hair, clothing, coat tails or a dress, floppy ears or a long tail.
  • Nothing stop all at ones. this is follow through.
  • Overlapping action is when the character change direction while his cloth or hair continues forwards.

6. Slow-out and Slow-in
  • As action starts,we have more drawing near the starting pose, one or two in the middle, and more drawing near the next pose.
  • Fewer drawing make the action faster and more drawing make the action slower.
  • Slow-ins and slow-outs soften the action, making it more life-like.
  • For a gag action, we may omit some slow-out or slow-ins for shock appeal or the surprise element. This will give more snap to the scene.

7. Arcs
  • When animating, it is important to keep track of the paths your character and their limbs take while moving across the screen.
  • Instead of translating directly from to point to point in straight lines, they should move in arcs.
  • Arcs will help your animation flow more naturally and look less robotic.

8. Secondary Action
  • Secondary action is the use of a subsidiary action within a scene to add more life and dimension to the main action.
  • Generally, this will be something moving that is affected by the main action.
  • If the secondary action are featured too prominently, they can overshadow the main action can add believably and detail to the scene.

9. Timing
  • Timing, give meaning to movement, both physical and emotion meaning. The animator must spend the appropriate amount of time on the anticipation of an action, on the action, and on the reaction to the action.
  • If too much time spent then the viewer may lose attention, if too little, then the viewer may not notice or understand the action.
  • Timing can also affect the perception of mass of an object. A heavier object takes a greater force and a longer time to accelerate and decelerate. For  example if a character pick up a heavy object such as a bowling ball, they should do it much slower than picking up a light object such as basketball
  • Similarly, timing affects  the perception of object size. A larger object move more slowly than a smaller object and has greater inertia.
  • These effects are done not by changing the poses but by varying the spaces or time between poses.

10. Exaggeration
  • Exaggeration is used in animation for visual effect. An action becomes a lot more interesting wit exaggeration to make it look extreme and surreal.
  • It is apposite of realism if we were to animation a perfect imitation, it could look static and dull.

11. Solid Drawing
  • Solid drawing is being able to draw your character from every angle in a believable manner so that they look alive.

12. Appeal
  • Character appeal is designing a character's look in a way that's real, interesting, and engaging to an audience.
  • Character appeal is difficult to quantify is like to gauge " charisma" in an actor. yet as in live action, star quality is important.
  • One strategy for creating a like able character is using symmetry, and smoother curves or shapes in their composition.
  • This tends to create a character that is easier for viewer to process.

2D ANIMATION (TASK 2)

Subj : 2D Animation
Task : Movement

In this week we do some exercise that relate to topic for this task such as
# life drawing
# fast character sketch
# fast movie sketch
# perspective

# LIFE DRAWING
We must draw our own class mate action for me at first I feel that this activity was difficult because I'm not use to draw people in a short time. furthermore I don't like to draw a life thing especially human. At first I only draw a stick men to represent the action after that  I get to used to the draw it little by little.

This is my first drawing, I made a stick men and than I feel that drawing stick men also not easy we must understand the actual position that we want to draw and then the drawing will look nice and can understand what actually the person do at that time. When we not understanding the position of the position our drawing of the stick men will look so messy and will make other person also not understand what we want to show.

This is my second drawing, for this drawing I almost understand what and how to do the live drawing and I start to love draw live drawing. When comes to third drawing I feel enjoy drawing the human at any position because I understand how and what should I do first. First we should know and understand the position very well after that try to feel the feeling of that position and start draw the structure of the human.
#FAST CHARACTER SKETCH
Fast character sketch we need  to sit down together and we need to draw face of our friend that sit in front us according to the order that give. We are ask to draw in 5 minute and use a limited line.
For me I think it was fun and it challenge me to think what should I draw that will look or  represent the character of my friend and this is my art work.

# PERSPECTIVE
For this subtopic I love to make it because when I was in form six I have done it but I'm not remember how to start it. Therefore I must start from beginning try to understand what is actually means by perspective. At first it look very confuse and I don't know where to put the focus point. but thanks to Tomie he help me a lot in understanding the concept of perspective.

This is my first try drawing a perspective, I think I have forget the rule and how to draw a perspective that why my drawing look like a rubbish...huhuhhuu... But try to identify where is my mistake and try to understand the concept of perspective.

And here it is, this is my second perspective drawing of the studio. I think I have understand the concept of perspective and I think I like it. Therefore  I continue draw a perspective of the corridor of the studio and this is my drawing.

Perspective is about how we see the thing the more closer the thing to us the bigger it in perspective drawing. Perspective drawing have many type such as one point of perspective drawing and two point of perspective drawing it depend on what we want to draw.

Drawing and Journey Activity

DRAWING ACTIVITY

In this week we do some activity in the class. we play some music and playing with some color. For me it was fun and I enjoy doing all the activities. Yesterday we do activity call JOURNEY this activity was about to do an observation about the painting that we had done with a music and water color.
When we grow up our mind was set to do something that more organizer but we forgot that sometime when we do something without planing will be more valuable than other artwork.
This is some of the artwork that we make.

figure 1: drawing made by Talib

This artwork made by talib and this is also his first drawing with music (figure 1). As we can see there is  many type of line in the art as we can see there is an energetic feeling in the line and there is also a continues line with a different curve. All of this line could be representational or nonrepresentational, but recognition and enjoyment of the work is more likely when the work is understood on the abstract level.

figure 2 : drawing made by Alexis

figure 3 : Drawing made by Talib

But for this artwork made by Alexis(figure 2) as we can see there is some circle and implied line that may be show that the music was stop or with a low note. There type of line seems to fade, stop, and/or disappear and then reappear as a continuation or an extension of an edge or a direction. Same goes to another drawing(figure 3) the line seem fade and sometime the line was disappear and then reappear again in continues form. The direction of the line are going downwards maybe it represent that the music was a sad song or maybe a slow song.

figure 4 : Drawing made by Aisyah

When I look at this drawing it looks like a fire, it looks like the music was rock music or a heavy music. It also looks like someone getting more energetic and understand the music
All this drawing we use the charcoal and the wax pencil to express our feeling towards the sounds that we heard.

figure 5 : Drawing made by Alexis

This is also some of the artwork that we make in that day but for this time we use the color to represent the sound and try to get in the music that was played.

From this drawing I can feel that the person was happy and feel enjoy while doing this drawing. They use the harmony color by repeating similar color but in a difference value or intensities and also controlling it placement in difference part of a composition. Other than that the effect of the transparent color that is look more interesting. The movement of the line that she use bring more expression of the happiness and the enjoying feeling of that moment and I also feel like want to dance when I saw this drawing. The use of the yellow color makes the drawing more energetic.

figure 6 : Drawing made by Aisyah

This is my drawing I just use the base color that is blue, red and yellow. I use that color because I think it will give the feeling of the music that I heard. When I look back the drawing it looks like a fire that comes from the sky with high speed to the ground and also looks like a meteor. The brown and green color give more effect of the speed because of the movement of the color. The using of the space also makes it look nice and the use of the small amount of warm color usually dominates a larger amount of cool color although both may be of the same intensity.

figure 7 : Drawing with music

For this drawing we made it together and the drawing give me feeling of the competition among us. There is one part of the drawing shows that everybody focuses on it and put many different color on it.

figure 8 : second print drawing

This is the second print of the original drawing it still look beautiful. As we see there is four blue dot in the drawing it look like a boundary of the drawing that surround it. From the drawing also I can feel that the expression of the feeling through the splashing of the color. There is black color on the drawing look like representing a conflict.

LEARNING OUTCOME
  • Sometime the art that without planing can give very artistic result and this art is the original idea we cannot do the same drawing although it made by the same person.
  • Learn to know how the blind artist do their drawing base on what they hear and feel. For me it is difficult to draw or write something without see it and I think we should be thankful that we still can be see and use our eye for something good.
  • The environment also can effect our drawing in expressing our emotion.
