COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

TASK D

VISUAL COMMUNICATION

Visual communication is communication through a visual aid and is describe as the transformation of idea and information in forms that can be read or looked upon. Visual communication in part or whole relies on vision, and is primarily presented or expressed with two dimension image, it also includes signs, typography, drawing, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, advertising, animation color and electronic resources. It also explore the idea that a visual message accompanying text has a greater power to inform, educate, or persuade a person or audience. For example we do an infographic, people have long accepted that the a picture can replace a thousand words, and similarly. Other than that a simple graph also can be replace a table full of  number. Basic visualization allows us to immediately  comprehend a message by detecting notable patterns, trend, and outline in the data.

Furthermore, using the visual communication also the information that we want to deliver will be more memorable. For this semester I took communicating practice that is relate to the visual communication so much. In the first task I need to do a infographic that we are believe when we use a visual in delivering something to the audience the information will look more interesting and easy to understand. For my infographic the topic is about the laksa in Malaysia. I need to do a research about the recipe and I need to read a recipe book to get the recipe for all the laksa in Malaysia. When I open the book we can see only the image of the laksa and the other ingredient was in text and it make me only remember the look of the food but when I want to cook I need to refer back to the book because I not remember the ingredient. Therefor I do an infographic about the ingredient in laksa, I also make the ingredient in the symbol form to make it easy to understand and look more interesting.

Other than that from my research also I find out that our brain will be remember a lot of thing with the thing that have many color such as the mind map that have a variety of color and less text. From the Goodnough and Woods (2002)vii discovered that students perceived mind mapping as a fun, interesting and motivating approach to learning. Several students attributed the fun aspect to the opportunity to be creative when creating Mind Maps through lots of choice in color, symbols, key words and design. According to Margulies (1991)vi,  before children learn a language, they visualize picture in their minds which are linked to concepts. Unfortunately, once children are trained to write only words in one color, on lined paper, their creative channels and mental flexibility diminishes. Using images, like Mind Maps, keeps this creativity fired up. Therefor it clear that using the color to deliver some information and using less text will give more impact to the audience.

For my infographic I use the color that it suitable to the food because my infographic is all about the food. I use the color that is not to bright and not to dull, the color that I choose it will make people interested on it and feel like want to try it. Other than that the symbol for the ingredient I just make a simple symbol. Some of the ingredient I just use the the geometric shape like triangle, circle, square and also triangle and some of the ingredient I just simplified it using the original shape like the shape of the salad and the shape of the meet. The using of the symbol is more effective to the audience to remember all the ingredient compare to the using of the text.

In conclusion, visual communication will give more impact compare to use the text. With the visual communication we can minimize the using of the text and replace it with the symbol, color and other object to make it look more interesting. When using visual communication people will be more interesting to find out what information that we want to deliver. Other than that visual communication also can be use in campaign or in the poster, it more effective compare just use the words. We can make the communication more interesting using the most creative ways like two dimension and also three dimension as long the information that we want to deliver still there and the audience will understand what we want to deliver.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

TASK C (Part 1)

The art of good communication comes with great listening skills. These are five interactive listening tips are present that can be use to becomes better listener.

  • PARAPHRASE the note that we take from what we listen and understand
  • REPEAT re-doing the thing
  • PROB missing information
  • CLARIFY asking the thing that is not understand or to make sure the point is right.
  • REMEMBER all the information that we get put it in mind and can use it in on the future.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

TASK C (Part 2)

In this task I need to think and make a summary from the text that was read by the lecture. There is three text that was read by the lecture first is about Branding, second is about Branding and Business and third is  about Branding and Society.

1. BRANDING

Branding was define the process involve in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumer mind, mainly though advertising campaign with a consistent theme. We use the branding almost every day but sometime the branding also can be miss interpreted. Other than that with the branding also it can link us to all the product that the company produce. The branding play an importance role in the company this is because the strong branding will boost the company. Beside that branding also will show the full personalty of the company. When people hear or look the branding they  will automatically think about the good or the feel when using the product. The good branding with the good product will convince the audience to buy and trust the brand. Branding also one of the way for the company to contact with the audience. A message can be deliver to the audience just through the branding.

2. BRANDING & BUSINESS

Branding was the most importance part in business. All the company use the branding to catch the general marketing With the branding also we can describe all the product that the company produce such as the branding for the food like Nestle. When we said Nestle we can imagine all the product that the company produce such as Milo,  ais-krim and also chocolate. The branding also must accurate with the product so the customer will give their trust to the product. Other than that the branding also must be visible to the employee and the customer.

3. BRANDING & SOCIETY

The branding should be flexibility and also adaptability on society. This is because with one branding it will known in global and that is why the branding should be flexibility to the society. Beside that when the brand know in global there will no re-brand for the company because to get the trust from the customer is not easy. It took long time to get the trust from the customer therefor if the branding could not boost the company try to do new marketing not re-brand the company. For example the brand of Samsung, before this Samsung was cheaper in Europe (1990's) compare to the Sony it more preferable in Europe but now the brand of Samsung have the same level with the Sony.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

QUOTES ( PROCESS )

Now I need to choose two of ten quotes and this is the quotes that I have choose :

Picture 1 : Art should comfort the disturbed & disturb the comfortable by Cesar Cruz
Picture taken from https://i0.wp.com/netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/uploads/2014/02/027.jpg
I choose this quotes because for me the back ground and the quotes are not suitable it look like scary and the typo also not suitable. I think it should use the peace color to show the feel of comfortable.
This quotes mean that with the art we can feel comfortable and with art also we can feel stress art mean everything to the art people.

the second quotes that I choose is :

Picture 2 : This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time!
This quotes have a clear meaning but as we can see from the picture 2 the arrangement of the typo are not suitable. There is some of the text that arrange in vertical and some in horizontal. It will make the audience difficult to read it.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

TASK  B

For the next task I need to find 10 quotes and pick two from it that it is difficult to understand and you think there is a problem from the designing of the quotes and design it again.

Many quotations are routinely incorrect or attributed to the wrong authors, and quotations from obscure or unknown writers are often attributed to far more famous writers. Deliberate misquotation is also common, though this often goes unnoticed, usually because the misquotation is better know or because the misquotation better fits a situation. There as a designer we need to redesign it back to make people clear about the quotes and also make it easy to understand.

Here I have choose two quotes that is for me it has a problem and need to fix it to make it easy to read and also make it look more nice.

The 10 quotes that I choose :

Picture 1 : this is your life and it's ending one minute at a time!

Picture 2 : You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have
picture taken from http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Wjl109CA1XI/U_Nvwk5TkXI/AAAAAAAABPI/29oXYaNQG2M/s1600/life-quotes-1.jpg

Picture 3 : If you can't convince them, confuse them by Harry Truman

Picture 4: The details are not the details. they make the design
picture taken from https://d18uw7g0wxki11.cloudfront.net/ckeditor_assets/pictures/2301/content_details-are-not-the-details-charles-eames-via-delphine.jpg

Picture 5 : Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you! by Dr. Seuss

Picture 6 : Sometimes you have to, as I say, build bridges where you can - but draw lines where you must by Fred Thompson

Picture 7 : The wireless telegraph is not difficult to understand. The ordinary telegraph is like a very long cat. You pull the tail in New York, and it meows in Los Angeles. The wireless is the same, only without the cat by Albert Einstein

picture 8 : Live is happening right now outside your screens

Picture 9 : Art should comfort the disturbed & disturb the comfortable by cesar cruz

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

INFOGRAPHIC ( Process )

Now I start to do my infographic in illustrator. I decided to make my infographic in 2D and design it in illustrator.

Picture 1 : drawing in illustrator of the outline for my infographic
picture taken from illustrator

first I need to draw the circle for my infographic, I divided it into 10 circle. At the middle I want to put the image of the fish and some typo for my infographic.

picture 2 : designing the middle of the infographic
picture taken from illustrator
After that I need to put all the ingredient into the infographic

Picture 3 : designing the ingredient and arrange it in the infographic
picture taken from illustrator
As we can see in the picture 3 I start arrange the ingredient in the infographic but I face a problem with it because I need to arrange it according the most ingredient was use in making laksa. The problem is some of the ingredient has the same important and I don't know which one I should put first. From here also I can put all the name of the state that I want to put.

As you can see there is a line that I put as division for all the ingredient. Why I put the line it is because it will make my work easier when I want to put the color for each of the ingredient in every state.

Picture 4 : put the color for all the state according to the ingredient
Picture taken from illustrator
From last update I have a problem with the color but after that I ask my lecture to give some idea about the color that I should use to make this infographic. Because this is the infographic about food therefore my lecture suggest to me to use the color that it not to bright and not to dull, the color that when people see it they will feel like want to eat and look delicious.

For now this is my final infographic but I think I need to change the color for the ingredient to look it more nice and clean other than that I think I want to change the typo for the name of state and also the color because I think the typo and the color are not suitable and difficult to read.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

INFOGRAPHIC ( PROCESS )

After finish designing the symbol for the ingredient and the main ingredient in laksa now I start to sketch the infographic. How I want my infographic to look and I also must design it in creative ways to make sure it can attract people to read it therefore I think I want to make it colorful , in first I need to think how I want my infographic to look like. Therefore I design it in circle shape. Why circle?? It is because when we talk about laksa,in Malaysia there is many type of laksa from different state and the ingredient is almost all are same only a few difference. it also like what ever or where ever you go to try a laksa the taste most likely a same but maybe there is laksa which is too spicy and too creamy.

Picture 1 : Sketch for design of the infographic
Picture taken by Aisyah using phone.

Other than that I also make the circle with eight layers. Each of the layers represent one state and at the second layers I put all the ingredient that I have design it. Like what we can see from the picture 1 at the center of the circle I put the image of the fish because as we know fish was the main thing in laksa. In all the layer I'll put the name for all the state according to their color. Other than that I also put a different color for every state.

Picture 2 : The color for each state
Picture taken by Aisyah using phone

From the picture 2 we can see the color for each state. In this process I get a problem with the color, first I want to make the color same with the color of the flag of each state but I notice that some of the  state have the same color such as the flag for the state Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan. And for Terengganu the color was black and white what color should I put?

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

INFOGRAPHIC ( PROCESS)

After all the info that I need to fill up my infographic are complete now I just need to design the look of the ingredient. I want to make it look simple but still have the characteristic of the ingredient. Try to simplify the color to make  the audience get what it is, such as the color of prawn it look like orange therefor I just simply put the orange color. Same goes to other ingredient, try to make it look like the real color of the ingredient.

Simplify the ingredient shape like recognize what shape of the thing after that just use the basic shape like circle or cylinder and design it to make it look like the thing that we want to represent. Like what I do is I just use the circle to represent the onion and I also use the shape cylinder to make a cucumber and other thing. Other than that I also simplify the image of the coconut milk by use the image of coconut only.

It looks like I use two or three item for the ingredient using the same shape like the shape of circle for the onion and the tamarind. To make it look difference therefore I just put it in difference color like the onion I color it with pink red and the tamarind I put color dark brown so the audience manage to identify the object. Other than that I also color the other ingredient with the suitable color such as the cucumber with green color, and prawn with orange color.

Picture 1 : My sketches for the ingredient in symbol
picture taken by Aisyah using camera phone
After finish the sketch of all the ingredient now I need to draw the main ingredient in laksa it is the fish.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

INFOGRAPHIC ( PROCESS)

When all the information are complete now I just need to category it and make a list of all the ingredient that we need to make a laksa. This is the list that I made for the ingredient of laksa:

After all the ingredient are listed now I just need to list it into how frequency it use in all the type of laksa.  From the list I notice that onion was the important thing beside the fist followed by chili, tamarind, mi laksa and other.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

INFOGRAPHIC ( PROCESS )

I have done a research about laksa around the Malaysia and from what I get not every state have a laksa only a few have it such as Johor, Melaka, Kelantan, Sarawak, Pulau Pinang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, and Terengganu.

WHAT IS LAKSA ?

Laksa is a popular spicy noodle soup which is combination of Chinese and Malay cuisine. It can be found in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. There is three basic type of laksa that is curry laksa, asam laksa and Sarawak laksa.

PENANG LAKSA

Penang laksa or Laksa Pulau Pinang also known as asam laksa from the Malay for tamarind, it comes from the Malaysia island of Penang. It is made with mackerel ( ikan  kembung ) soup and its main distinguishing feature is the asam or tamarind which gives the soup a sour taste. The fish is poached and then flaked. Other than that in this laksa also they put another ingredient like lemongrass, galangal and chili to make the laksa have its distinctive flavour.

KEDAH LAKSA

Kedah laksa is very similar to Penang laksa and only difference in the garnishing used. Sliced boiled eggs are usually added to the dish. Kedah laksa used rice to make a laksa noodle. The famous laksa in kedah is laksa Telok Kechai.

KELANTAN LAKSA

Kelantan laksa is from state in Northeastern Malaysia. It has base a mackerel ( ikan kembung ), thick coconut milk, stalks lemongrass, shallots, cloves garlic, slices dried tamarind, palm sugar and salt.

JOHOR LAKSA

Johor laksa from Johor state in southern Malaysia, resembles Penang laksa only in the kind of fish but difference in everything else. Johor laksa has coconut milk, use kerisik, dried prawns, lemon grass galagal and spices akin to curry. The garnishing comprises slices of onion, beansprouts, mint leaves, daun kesum, cucumber and pickled white radish. Finally before eating, freshly squeezed lime juice is sprinkled on the dish. The unique to Johor laksa is its Italian connection because spaghetti is used instead of the normal rice noodle or vermicelli. Johor laksa is traditionally eaten using the hand and the noodle are usually knitted into a disk for each serving.

SARAWAK LAKSA

Sarawak laksa comes from the Malaysian state Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. It is actually very different from curry laksa as the soup contains no curry at all. It has a base of sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galagal, lemon grass and coconut milk, topped with omelette strips, chicken strips, prawns, fresh coriander and optionally lime. Ingredient such as sprouts, fried tofu or other seafood are not traditional but sometimes added.

TERENGGANU LAKSA

Terengganu laksa is the easiest laksa recipe that is famous among people from the town of Kuala Terengganu of the Terengganu  state, located at the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The main ingredient of Terengganu laksa's sauce is ikan kembung that are boiled and minced. The minced fish are fried with onion, garlic, ginger, belacan, kantan flower, daun kesum, lemon grass and dried tamarind slice. Coconut milk will then be added as the final ingredient and stirred until it is all mixed up and becomes thick.

COMMUNICATING PRACTICE

INFOGRAPHIC ( PROCESS)

In last post I decided to make my info graphic about 'guide to be successful graphic designer' but my lecture said that this topic many people have done it therefore I must search to another topic that is more towards local things that not everyone know about it like the name of the traditional food. Therefor I decided to make my info graphic is about the ingredient in  laksa around Malaysia.

As we know in Malaysia there is many type of laksa such as Pineng Laksa, Sarawak Laksa, Johor Laksa and many more but are we realize that majority of the ingredient in laksa are same. The main part of laksa is the fish and onion but there is some of the laksa contain a little bit of difference such as Sarawak Laksa, they do not use fish as the main ingredient in laksa but they use chicken and prawn as the important part in laksa. It same goes to another state, they have put some addition ingredient into their laksa to make it taste difference. Therefore we can taste a difference laksa at difference state this make the laksa very unique.

I interested in making this laksa infographic because although it have a difference taste and difference ingredient but it still call laksa and not everyone know the difference. To make this infographic first I need to make a research about all the laksa in Malaysia.

GUIDE TO A SUCCESSFUL GRAPHIC DESIGN

Infographic

We need to find one topic and make infographic from the information that I get. My topic is "Guide to a successful graphic design" I have do some research about it and this is the list that we should do to be a successful graphic design.

GUIDE TO A SUCCESSFUL GRAPHIC DESIGN

1. SKY IS THE LIMIT
= Push yourself to the maximum and never stop dreaming

2. COMMUNICATE
= It is the main purpose of graphic design

3. GET YOUR ENGLISH RIGHT
= Always double check your spelling and grammar

4. PRACTICE MAKE IT PERFECT
= Redo your old design and other people's design

5. NEVER STOP LEARNING
= Read, take online classes or other training at collage
= Teach somebody, you will learnt a lot by teaching

6. JACK OF ALL TRADES
= The more skills you bring to the table, the better you can help your clients

7. ACKNOWLEDGE
= In your career, you will need help or guidance from other.
= Thanks them, and be there when somebody need you.

8. BE PERSISTENT & PASSIONATE
= The number of times you get knocked down pick and brush yourself up
= To pursue your passion you must have persistence

9. KISS ( KEEP IT SIMPLE, SILLY )
= Simplicity attract all
= Keep it fresh and be straight to point

10. DEVELOP CONSTANTLY
= Don't think you know all, thing evolve and change
= Keep learning and developing your skills

11. BE CONFIDENT
= Be proud of your work but don't take criticisms personally
= Don't nail the brief first time  as people's tastes vary in this industry

12. CREATIVITY COMES FROM WITHIN
= Try to experiment maximum principle of design
= Explore yourself and work tirelessly as impossible is nothing

After done the presentation I need to do another infographic about another thing such as something that relate with myself or my background which something local. Why local? When we do infographic about obesity or some tips to be something good it will be same like what we see in internet but if do some difference it will make people want to know what we try to say using the infographic. Sometime a local people also do not know the local thing.

What is Infographic ?

Subj : Communication Practice
Task : What is Infographic ?

From this task I learnt about  infographic and I do some research about it.
I have read a book about infographic and for what I understand is infographic is about a data that we interpret it into data visualization. In infographic content less word but more to symbol and image to deliver a message to the audience. Other than that as a designer when we want to make a infographic we should know who our audience.

The infographic usually have many color so that it will look attractive and it should be simple but have all the important information on it.  In 2001, Dr. Edward R. Tufte, one of the pioneers of modern data visualization and professor emeritus of political science, statistics, and computer science from Yale University, clearly explained this phenomenon when he stated, “Of all methods for analyzing and communicating static information , well-designed data graphic are usually the simplest and at the same time the most powerful "

If you want to make the good infographic, the infographic should:
= Accurate
= Pick a good topic ( controversial topic )
= Search for prior art
= Focus on the key message
= Minimize text
= Eliminate chart legends
= Be data transparent
= The fine print
= Final thoughts
= Reference
= Links
